Good Neighbour Schemes

Setting up a Good Neighbour Scheme FAQs

What are the first steps in setting up a good neighbour scheme for my community?

If you can find three or four community-spirited people who want to make their local area a better place, then you’ll have the bones in place for your scheme. But we can also help you to find people who may be interested in helping you too.

What support do you offer?

We’ll help you every step of the way. From forming a committee to sourcing funding, finding volunteers to publicising your scheme to new clients we have the experience to support you at every stage.

Do you provide on-going support?

Yes. We’ll continue to support you as you develop and you can lean on us as much or as little as you wish. We send out a newsletter with information and advice every other month and we also organise annual meetings to bring schemes across Surrey together so they can share best practice.

What do I need to do next?

Get in touch with our Good Neighbour Schemes Officer on 01483 447103 or email [email protected] We can’t wait to hear from you!

Become a volunteer

Becoming a volunteer driver is easy and volunteers can give as much or as little time as they choose, as well as decide the days and times during which they are available.

Many schemes are also looking for Duty Officers to make a more regular commitment to receive calls from clients and to find a volunteer driver to take the client to their destination. This could be just a few hours a week.

All volunteers are rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping elderly neighbours to live independently for longer. Feedback such as “This is the first time I have been out for six months” and “What would we do without you? We are so grateful for all you do” makes a little bit of effort very worthwhile.

Take a look at video above to see how volunteers are making a difference across Surrey by helping an older person out.

We’ve all got a spare hour or two in the week to help out. There’s a real need, I can help and it doesn’t take much of my time
